The dental secretary course is made up of 11 units:

1 Introduction
The role and assigned tasks of each dental team member is explained here. This unit also provides an overview of the various dental specializations in Canada and the main professional dental associations and schools.

2 Basic concepts related to anatomy, diseases and treatments
The information in this module is very useful for the units that follow, those that deal with billing and planning treatments in particular. Dental secretaries need to understand dental terminology clearly in order to bill for patient care correctly and plan complex treatments that take multiple steps.

3 Managing clinical records
In this unit, the instructor describes each clinical record form and explains how to correctly fill out each section in every case.

4 Planning treatments
Having mastered some basic concepts, in this unit students learn how to efficiently and correctly plan treatments at a dental clinic. At the end of the unit, there are examples of schedules and a review exercise.

5 Records management
This module explains to the students how to manage clinic documents and filing systems, how to transfer documents and what information must be written on the folder sleeve. At the end of the unit, SafeGuard folder sleeves are presented. The use of colored tabs is also explained.

6 Time management
This unit provides important information that will help future dental secretaries be efficient as possible. Instruction on how to organize oneself to complete daily tasks and deal with unexpected events is offered.

7 Communication
Communications are crucial to the business success of a dental clinic. The quality of the care that is offered is important, but clients who can go to whichever clinic they want will prefer one that is warm, welcoming and staffed by friendly people. This unit explains how to improve client relations and join a dental clinic team with ease.

8 RAMQ billing procedures
The students are invited to discover all the rules to follow when they will bill  for dental treatments provided to RAMQ covered patients. They have a couple of exercises to do in order to acquire experience and good understanding of the billing procedures.

9 ACDQ billing and accounting
This unit deals with billing for clinic treatments according to the specific codes, and for each category of patient, whether or not they have insurance. It also provides information about bookkeeping for clinics. There are also tests and exercises about this material at the end of this unit.

10 Dental secretary at work
This last module introduces future dental secretaries to working relationships in clinics. It provides instruction on a very important topic: how to prepare for and present oneself at a job interview. Models of a letter of introduction and resume that will help land an interview are provided. Students will also learn how to write a description of their career goals, what mistakes to avoid and–most importantly–where jobs can be found. Students are then invited to write their resume and cover letter. Our team will be happy to review these if necessary.

11 Dental software (optional)
Acadent provides online and in-person training on the use of dental software. This helps students build the skills they will need in computerized work environments. Students learn basic skills as how to use the software to manage appointments, insurance and billing procedures and  also advanced functions as: reports, treatment plans or postponed payments.
